Mac Loses Speed Shootout

Cars, people, operating systems - you can test the speed of all these things. But the last category on my list doesn’t get as much attention as the other two, so Kevin Schmitt sought to remedy that by testing XP, Vista, and Tiger.

The test data is available on After Effects, but as for the results . . . XP did quite well. Schmitt writes, “While I’m not at all surprised that the Mac OS X version of After Effects CS3 didn’t keep up with either version of Windows, I am slightly disappointed that the results weren’t closer . . . . In any event, I look forward to adding Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) numbers into the mix once Apple deems it fit for release.”

Fake Steve an equally fake blogger

Sweeping Security Update For Macs

Macs have a reputation for being “safe,” and a new security update should keep it that way. Well, all right - the existence of this update highlights some problems, but now that they’re fixed, no one can complain.

Anyway, “The update is available for Intel and PowerPC-based Macs running Mac OS X 10.3.9 or 10.4.10,” according to the Mac Observer’s Jeff Gamet, “and includes updates for iChat, CoreAudio, PHP, Quartz Composer, Samba, WebCore, WebKit, and more.”

Gamet goes on to get into the specifics - and there are quite a few details to address - but users might be best off downloading first and asking questions later.

Apple juices rumor mill with pending announcement

The revamped iMac could be the topic of discussion when Apple’s chosen attendees at its August 7th press event see what Steve Jobs has up the sleeves of his turtleneck.
