Apple Asks Google To Leave Off Multi-Touch For The G1

Next to the iPhone, the T-Mobile G1 could be the most anticipated handset out on the market. With it being the first phone to utilize the Google Android OS, many were wanting to see what the G1 was capable of. Apparently, one feature that was going to come with the G1 was left off, per request from Apple.

Multi-touch, is a technology that as of now is exclusive to the iPhone. The idea of the phone being able to pick up multiple points of touch has really added to the value of the handset. Google was looking to provide its users with the same experience, but was asked by Apple to leave it out.

There have been no official reasons as to why Apple made this request. There’s of course the obvious reason that Apple wants to have the only multi-touch phone on the market. But could this in fact hurt Apple in the long run? No one likes a bully, and is the pressure Apple is putting on Google fair?

Of course, right now it’s all pure speculation as to what is really going on between the friendly companies. Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google is on the board of directors at Apple which could have something to do with the decision. It will be interesting to see if there’s a backlash from G1 users, and what will happen when they demand multi-touch capabilities. Quite a predicament indeed.

*UPDATED* – It should be noted that all of this is speculation, and rumor up to this point. Venturebeat cites an anonymous source for their tip, who happens to work on the Android team. This isn’t anything official though. Thanks to Eric for catching this.

CSS Animation Making its Way To Safari

To enjoy most of the animations you see on the internet, you have to download the Adobe Flash Player. For some, this can be a hinderance, and if anything it leaves Adobe as the primary solution for web animation. Apple looks to be changing that, as they are going to implement animation through CSS.

They’ve already started it with mobile Safari on the iPhone. With support for the Mac OS X build of Safari soon to come. WebKit Blog made the initial find, and have already put the feature to interesting use. Of course, you’ll need to view it with your iPhone’s Safari.

This latest news has left a division in terms of whether people like it or not. For designers, it is a great advancement. Because you don’t have to implement Flash in order to bring animation to your site. For users it leaves a more mixed reaction. While some see it as an advancement, others wonder what this means in terms of having options to not view site animations. Some people just don’t care whether a site makes cool little movements or not. Hopefully, these questions will be answered as more information is released.

What are you thoughts about this? Are you liking that site animations are being expanded upon through CSS? Or could you care less about animations, and just visit sites for the content?

iPhone App Of The Day – Monster Memory

Monster Memory

I think that memory games reach the largest audience of any kind of game out there. There’s something about the exercise of ‘remembering’ that appeals to anyone from age 3-93. Of course it’s hard to make a creative memory game, because there are only so many exercises you can do to make a game out of it. Monster Memory doesn’t break the mold, but it does bring a creative style to the card flip memory game types. All of the monsters are cute, and you’ll find yourself trying to unlock more as you play.

Will Snow Leopard Bring The End To PowerPC Support?

For you PowerPC lovers out there, the latest news of Apple’s iLife and rumors of Snow Leopard have probably left you frowning. It is being reported by Arstechnica that a significant portion of iLife, specifically Garage Band will only be compatible with Intel machines.

This news follows the rumor that Snow Leopard, Apple’s next OS will only support Intel. This of course is still just a rumor, as many details about Snow Leopard are still not known.

So, what do you think about the possibility of Macs going exclusively to Intel? Are you a fan of PowerPC, and will miss it if it’s dropped?
