iPhone Free App Of The Day – VirtualVolume

Virtual Volume

I’m not sure how many of you reading this carry around MRI’s or cat scans on a regular basis. However, if you do, or are a doctor then take a look at this app. You might be wondering why such an obscure app would be ‘App of the Day’. I’m featuring it because of the insane price drop that the app took. Originally, Virtual Volume set you back $20. Now it’s free. I’m not sure how long this sale is going on for, but if you have a MRI I’ve read good things about it.

iTunes Updates to 8.1

For those who load up iTunes today, you’ll see a new update available to install. There are few improvements, but the biggest addition if the supported syncing with the iPod Shuffle.

To sync with the 3rd generation iPod Shuffle, you must have iTunes 8.1 downloaded. Another odd addition is the improvement of CD imports to be the same quality as iTunes Plus. If anyone tries this, please report how it works out.

Here’s the features of the iTunes 8.1 update:

iTunes 8.1 is now faster and more responsive. You will enjoy noticeable improvements when working with large libraries, browsing the iTunes Store, preparing to sync with iPod or iPhone, and optimizing photos for syncing.

iTunes 8.1 provides many other improvements and bug fixes, including:

• Supports syncing with iPod shuffle (3rd generation).
• Allows friends to request songs for iTunes DJ.
• Adds Genius sidebar for your Movies and TV Shows.
• Improves performance when downloading iTunes Plus songs.
• Provides AutoFill for manually managed iPods.
• Allows CDs to be imported at the same sound quality as iTunes Plus.
• Includes many accessibility improvements.
• Allows iTunes U and the iTunes Store to be disabled separately using Parental Controls.

iPhone App Of The Day – Pocket God

Pocket God

The more I’m around sim/god type games (The Sims, Black & White, Sim City); you begin to see the true nature of people. Being able to do whatever you want to virtual people, there’s something sadistically fun about it. Pocket God brings that same sadistic fun to the iPhone/iPod Touch. Pocket God allows you to be the god of the people who’s home is on a lone island. You can perform all kinds of weird, and interesting acts on them. Here are some of my favorites:

- Lift a shark out of the water, and smack your villagers in the head with it. Then drop it on the island for fun.

- Allow the villagers to sacrifice themselves to the volcano.

- Use your godly powers to shift the gravitational force on the island.

Apple Releasing A Touchscreen Netbook This Year? (Rumor)

The Dow Jones newswire is reporting on a rumor, that Apple is currently planning on releasing a netbook as early as the end of the year. If that’s not enough, it’s going to be fully touchscreen.

The Dow Jones report doesn’t really provide any substantial sources. They have leads from “sources”, of course unnamed. The sources reveal that the netbooks will sport screen sizes of around 10″.

Apparently, Apple is working with two industry experts. One of them specializing in small-medium notebook screens, and the other focuses on touch screen technology.

Again, this is all rumor for now. Time will tell if the sources behind the leak will be credible to look out for in the future.

iPhone App Of The Day – CubeCheater

CubeCheater

If you lived in the 80′s, or know someone who has, or know about the decade in general then you’ve heard of the Rubik’s cube. This puzzling little box has been driving people insane for years. Of course if you figured out the puzzle, then you can brag about it to others, or keep your sanity. Or you can cheat, and use this iPhone app to show you solutions to the puzzle box no matter what configuration the cube is set to. Just input the different sides of the cube, and the app shows you the solution. Definitely pretty cool.

Time Capsule and Airport Get Security Fixes in Latest Update

For those who use Airport, or Time Capsule have probably already downloaded the latest firmware update. If you haven’t then here are some of the fixes released in the firmware:

-The IPv6 Neighbor Discovery Protocol implementation does not validate the origin of Neighbor Discovery messages. By sending a maliciously crafted message, a remote user may cause a denial of service, observe private network traffic, or inject forged packets. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of Neighbor Discovery messages.

- An out-of-bounds memory access issue exists in the handling of PPPoE discovery packets. By sending a maliciously crafted PPPoE discovery packet, a remote user may be able to cause an unexpected device shutdown. This update addresses the issue through improved bounds checking

- When IPv6 support is enabled, IPv6 nodes use ICMPv6 to report errors encountered while processing packets. An implementation issue in the handling of incoming ICMPv6 “Packet Too Big” messages may cause an unexpected device shutdown. This update addresses the issue through improved handling of ICMPv6 messages.

If you want more detailed descriptions, or to download the update you can visit the support page, here.
