Don’t crack that iPhone yet. Reports of legal challenges to a couple of iPhone unlocking projects have emerged on the Web.
George Hotz may be tooling around in a Nissan 350Z for being the first person to unlock an iPhone, but everyone else may be stuck in AT&T’s slow lane. Both major gadget blogs Engadget and Gizmodo have reported on iPhoneUnlocking.com’s claim of legal hassles in the dark of night from the Death Star’s legal department:
The sale of unlocking codes is on hold after the company received a telephone call from a Menlo Park, California, law firm at approximately 2:54 a.m. this morning (GMT).
After saying they were phoning on behalf of AT&T, the law firm presented issues such as copyright infringement and illegal software dissemination. Uniquephones is taking legal advice to ascertain whether AT&T was sending a warning shot or directly threatening legal action.
Folks, if these attache-bearing sharks were calling on behalf of AT&T, you can bet a stack of SIM cards they’ll follow up a warning shot with something else.
