Apple Stores Steal Windows Users

Those Apple stores were apparently a really good idea - new data proves that “half of the 330,000 Macs sold in Apple’s stores were to people who were new to the Mac OS,” according to TechBlog’s Dwight Silverman.

“A 50 percent newbie rate is remarkable, but likely is not sustained across all of Apple’s sales channels,” he continues. “Chances are it’s lower online and certainly through its business resellers, but it may approach 50 percent in other retail outlets, such as Best Buy and what’s left of CompUSA.”

So it’s that human touch, it seems, that is making people take make the leap away from Windows. Of course, anybody who’s seen the Mac-PC commercials might have guessed that.

Mac Sales See Strong Growth

When you do better than your competitors, it’s nice. When you do almost four times as well, then you’re in pretty great shape. And that’s where Apple finds itself today, as Mac sales were up 26.2 percent for the second quarter, compared to an industry average of just 7.2 percent.

“Apple shipped 960,000 computers during the three month period,” reports Apple 2.0’s Philip Elmer-DeWitt, who later notes, “No. 1 computer maker Dell, by contrast, sold 4.85 million computers in the U.S. during Q2, for a 28.4% market share.”

Dell may not be too pleased with these results, but I bet Apple is holding a lot of parties.

Mac Guy Not Tech Guy

The actor in the Mac commercials known as the “Mac Guy” gets a lot of attention when he is out in public. In an article in the Washington Post actor Justin Long talks about how people even ask him for tech support because they think he is a Mac expert. He also talks about his role in the new movie “Live Free or Die Hard” where he plays a hacker side kick along side Bruce Willis. One of the ironies he says is that he is not good with gadgets or any tech stuff related to computers.

Safari 3.0 Threatens WebKit Apps

Safari 3.0 is making waves by damaging some users’ WebKit apps, according to an article posted on Macworld. “Numerous postings on Apple’s user-to-user support forum recounted various misfortunes when they installed the Safari preview - or tried to,” reports Gregg Keizer. “Only hours after Safari 3.0’s launch, a user identified as ‘max’ said, ‘Just downloaded it, but while installing the installer crashed. Now my old Safari is gone and the installer app does no longer work!”

Apple’s not yet indicated that any fix is forthcoming (or even that it’s aware of the problem). In the meantime, Safari’s losing a lot of fans.

Nokia Nods At Macs

A new product from Nokia is here, and its arrival marks a noteworthy change in the corporate scheme of things. “After years of treating Apple users as second class citizens, Nokia has released a Beta version of Nokia Media Transfer for Mac, which enables its N-series mobile phones to transfer music, photos and other files to and from a Mac,” observes Steve O’Hear, the editor of last100.

As for whether this change is a good one, O’Hear continues, “The Nokia Media Transfer works as advertised and has enough iTunes and iPhoto integration to feel like a proper Mac application.”

It sounds as if Nokia’s nod to Mac users has been returned (in a manner of speaking) in kind.
