It’s true that dual-booting Windows is always a possibility – and every once in a while, some kind publisher such as Blizzard will release a title for PCs and Macs simultaneously. But let’s face the reality. Despite years of hype from Apple, Mac gaming still sucks.

Thankfully, that’s all about to change. Thanks to a new video game on demand service called OnLive, Mac users will soon be able to stream high quality, GPU-intensive Windows games straight to their lowly MacBooks, Eee PCs, or even their television.

As GameSpot reports from the 2009 Game Developers Conference, the new service (which is set to go live in 2009), will allow Mac (and PC) users to stream high-quality games to their home computers, so long as they have at least a 1.5 Mbps internet connection.

The games themselves will be hosted on OnLive’s servers and served up via the magic of cloud computing. Users can use their keyboards and mice or plugin controllers to play. OnLive plans on upgrading their servers seamlessly behind the scenes, so gamers will always be able to play the latest and greatest games years into the future.

For those worried about latency, Kotaku has a hands-on report, and they seem excited. OnLive has the potential to change not just Mac gaming, but the PC gaming community as a whole.

And watch out, Nintendo — OnLive will also sell a minimal box that connects to a television set, meaning that the service may make home consoles obselete. With commitments from EA, Ubisoft, Take-Two, and others, OnLive is definitely a company to watch.

Do you remember the good ol’ days when happiness was found in something as simple as crayons, and a coloring book? If you do remember those times, then Crayon Physics Deluxe is a great way to bring the memories back. It is a puzzle game, where you have to draw on the screen to create items in order to progress through the game. It sounds simple, which it is but as you progress it becomes pretty challenging. The game uses crayon like motions, and ‘physics’ to portray a life-like experience.

What makes the App Store so brillaint, in my opinion is the affordable system on which it sales apps. There are some useful, and fun apps to download, but it’s really the price structure that attracts so many downloaders.

According to sources for Pocketgamer.biz, Apple is going to try and start the App Store down a different path. One in which they will offer a larger platform where more quality games can be released. Of course with higher quality, comes a higher price.

The new pricing platform would have certain games release at $19.99. This option would only be available to a few developers, and publishers. It would allow for increasing the size of game files, as well as improve the overall quality of the gaming apps.

I’m not quite sure how to feel about this move, if it does go through. On one hand, we’ll be getting better games but will the price be worth it. The great thing about the games, and apps in general for the iPhone, and iPod Touch is that they are affordable. I’m not sure the iPhone has the capabilities to challenge the Nintendo DS, or PSP in terms of larger scale releases.

—————————

What are your thoughts on the rumor? With the setup of the iPhone/iPod Touch, could they release games with a higher cost around $19.99?

They have a pretty tight stranglehold in the music player industry, and growing fast in the computer market. So is it really that crazy to think that Apple would enter the video game foray?

According to Ken Fischer at Ars Technica, the idea isn’t crazy at all. Fischer reports that Apple filed for a trademark that contained alot of content pertaining to video games. Here is an excerpt from the official trademark filling:

“Toys, games and playthings, namely, hand-held units for playing electronic games; hand-held units for playing video games; stand alone video game machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only; LCD game machines; electronic educational game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games”

So while this trademark request covers many areas, it’s hard not to notice the heavy emphasis on video games. This is definitely one story to keep a look out for.

A new web site – AssistiveGaming.com serves as a resource for Mac gamers that have physical disabilities.

The site was launched by assistive technology software company AssistiveWare.

“I have been designing universal access solutions for Mac OS X since 2002 and one of the most frequently asked question by users is not whether they can do their home work or write the next great novel, but about what games can be played,” said David Niemeijer, AssistiveWare’s CTO. “With AssistiveGaming.com we have created a platform where users can exchange their gaming experiences and can share tips and tricks.”

“I have been gaming with a switch on the Mac since 1995, long before Mac OS X, long before sites like this even existed. I had no guidance, no advice,” said Michael Phillips, AssistiveGaming editor and long-time Inside Mac Games contributor. “Part of me totally understands why this site is important, but another part finds it kind of sad. I notice that both assistive technology users and specialists are afraid to try new things, think outside the box, or worse, people never even consider the fact that gaming is possible at all.”

The site consists of feature articles on general gaming topics, game reviews, and short descriptions of games focusing on accessibility.

You may have caught some of the hype about the next game from Will Wright, the creator of the ever-popular SimCity and Sims games.

It’s called Spore and in it you start out a single celled organism and work your way up the evolutionary chain until you achieve as far as I can tell, something like God-status.

The game is very highly anticipated and Electronic Arts has announced that it will not only be released for PCs, but for Macs as well. This is huge news for Mac gamers.

“We couldn’t be happier to bring Spore to the Mac at the same time as the PC version. Spore is a highly creative game and I look forward to seeing what the players come up with to fill the universe they design,” Wright stated.

Perhaps more companies will start releasing games for Macs at the same time as PCs.

You probably noticed that the debut of Madden NFL ’08 happened on schedule for the Windows platform. Did you know the Mac version should have been released the same day?

Madden for Mac still languishes at EA, as does Tiger Woods Golf ’08. They might be out on the Mac in September or October:

When pressed for an explanation, the EA spokesperson said there were no definitive reasons available for the delay but alluded to a possible lack of experience with Mac development. This was possibly prompted in part by the company’s years-long absence from the platform.

In speaking to AppleInsider, the spokesperson nonetheless claimed that four ports of previously released titles — Battlefield 2142, Command and Conquer 3, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and Need for Speed Carbon — were already available in stores. As of press time, however, EA was unable to provide the name of a single store at which customers could purchase any of the titles.

Instead of six EA titles arriving this summer for Mac gamers, a big fat zero has arrived so far. EA must think everyone on the Mac platform is still trying to get through Pathways Into Darkness.

Via AppleInsider
