CUPERTINO, California—September 28, 2009—Apple® today announced that more than two billion apps have been downloaded from its revolutionary App Store, the largest applications store in the world. There are now more than 85,000 apps available to the more than 50 million iPhone™ and iPod touch® customers worldwide and over 125,000 developers in Apple’s iPhone Developer Program.

“The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it.”

Today, iPhone and iPod touch customers in 77 countries worldwide can choose from an incredible range of apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel. With the recently introduced iTunes® 9, modern warfare 3, it’s now easier than ever to organize and sync your apps right in iTunes and they will automatically appear on your iPhone or iPod touch with the same layout.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. As it stands right now, digital music players (of which iTunes is the king) have no problem offering the sale of single tunes—one song at a time—rather than entire albums. Across the fence from the digital music providers sit the music producers, for whom selling albums—collections of songs—is their bread and butter. The paradigm shift to one-by-one sales has been a hammer-blow to the music providers who rely on the bigger-ticket sales of albums. People would rather spend a buck and get a great song than spend seventeen bucks and get a bundle of songs—some of which they may like, and some they won’t. In a that-settles-it-tone, David Ring, an executive for Universal Music Group said: one-by-one downloads [is] not a business that can grow.”

So…something needs to change, right?

The new approach currently in discussion, may be Apple giving a boost to the record companies by adding a flourish to album sales. The idea already has a codename: “Cocktail.” It would offer album sales, but amp up the offering by giving purchasers pictures, lyrics, videos, artwork, liner notes—other cool stuff like that. In addition, the new format will give listeners the option of playing music straight from the album (in a new virtual format) rather than utilizing the iTunes software to do so.

The million (or more) dollar question is: “will it work?” Uh…not sure about that. If we judge it by a lookalike venture from Sony BMG just over a year ago, it won’t work out so well. But maybe Apple has the chutzpah to stuff this in the faces of consumers—just like they did with the controversial ninety-nine cent track sale. And maybe, just maybe, consumers will like it.

Maybe. The whole idea is to make more money. The plus for the purchaser is the acquisition of extras to an album purchase. Right now, few reviewers are raving over Cocktail’s proposal. Consumers are used to being picky, and they may not be thrilled about giving more of their money to watch a video or check out the liner notes. After all, the music will go straight to the iPod, which goes straight to the pocket, which goes along for the jog, or commute, or whatever.

The latest trend in comestibles these days is to get it organic. Meanwhile, iPhones are pretty much sweeping the tech world. Combine them, and what do you get? Gluten-free techies roaming the aisles looking for tofu and vegan burgers? Quite possibly. Let’s make that actually.

While Whole Foods Market is attracting food-snobs in droves, the marketing department has apparently also noticed that many of their customers are also up on the latest tech trends, too. In response, Whole Foods has developed the Whole Foods iPhone app that gives users the directions to the closest Whole Foods Market, allows them to check store hours, find out the local specials, grab a recipe for dinner, and investigate the nutritional information for the grilled salmon they’re having for supper. Since the app is free, it’s obvious that Whole Foods isn’t using it to generate revenue. They’re using it to whet appetitesand funnel more customers in for grocery shopping.

Whole Foods Market isn’t the only tech-savvy company that has married technology with food. Dunkin’ Donuts has done the same. Passionate coffee lovers can’t resist, even if their marketing strategy is a bit more direct than Whole Foods. Rather than obliquely suggest that customers buy food at their store, Dunkin’ Donuts virtually demands it. With the app “Dunkin’ Run” coffee-loving iPhone users can take office coffee orders right on their iPhone. As if that’s not enough, other Dunkin’ Run users will receive alerts when someone is planning a run to the shop, and orders can be placed online-right from the interactive online menu.

As other cuisiniers, restaurant owners, and food chains get caught up in the world domination of apps for everything, we may find more eager shoppers at our coffee shops and grocery stores, wandering the aisles-iPhone in hand.

For those who are jumping onto the internet phenomenon, Twitter, today’s app is what you need for your iPhone. Everything that you do on Twitter, is availale on the Tweetie app. Handle multiple Twitter accounts at once, manage your favorite tweets. On top of the features, Tweetie has the best interface of all the Twitter applications. Unfortunately, unlike Twitter, Tweetie costs money, $2.99 worth. If you are really addicted to Twitter, and want the ability to tweet anywhere, then get this app.

Today’s app is just as useful as it is cool, and interesting. Simply take a picture of a book, DVD, game, and you’ll get back a description and links to numerous sites where the item is featured. I’ve tested it on numerous items, and it works really well. I’ve had to get really obscure to find something that it wouldn’t return a listing for.
