Steve Jobs Will Not Speak At Macworld 2009
In what many consider to be a blind-sided move from Apple, Steve Jobs has stepped down as keynote speaker of Macworld 2009. In what could be considered even bigger news, is that this will be the last Macworld Expo for Apple.
It’s quite sad to see the last Macworld Expo be without Steve Jobs, the man that made them so great. VP Phil Schiller will take his place, which is a decisions that many have questioned. Due to Schiller’s lack of star quality, and energy.
Many have been trying to find reasons why Apple would drop MacWorld from their agenda. I think that it’s pretty obvious that the economy has had quite a bit to do with it. Trying to cut costs is something that even the large, successful corporations are having to go through. Although, many analysts predict a huge falling out in Wall Street for Apple, due to this decision.
Another aspect of the situation that people are questioning, is the absence of Steve Jobs. Since this will be the very last MacWorld Expo, you’d figured he’d be the man to deliver it. Many attribute this decision to Steve Job’s health. He’s had complications with a previous pancreatic surgery this year.
Here’s the official press release, with all the information straight from Apple:
“CUPERTINO, California—December 16, 2008—Apple® today announced that this year is the last year the company will exhibit at Macworld Expo. Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, will deliver the opening keynote for this year’s Macworld Conference & Expo, and it will be Apple’s last keynote at the show. The keynote address will be held at Moscone West on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. Macworld will be held at San Francisco’s Moscone Center January 5-9, 2009.
Apple is reaching more people in more ways than ever before, so like many companies, trade shows have become a very minor part of how Apple reaches its customers. The increasing popularity of Apple’s Retail Stores, which more than 3.5 million people visit every week, and the Apple.com website enable Apple to directly reach more than a hundred million customers around the world in innovative new ways.
Apple has been steadily scaling back on trade shows in recent years, including NAB, Macworld New York, Macworld Tokyo and Apple Expo in Paris.
Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone. “

Do a bit of research and you’ll quickly come to the realization that this is a progressive withdrawal from trade shows that started nearly 15 years ago.
Macworld used to be held in more than a dozen locations around the world. Jobs did keynotes for the shows in Boston, Paris, Tokyo and San Francisco, not to mention NAB and quite a few other shows “back in the day”.
One by one, Apple withdrew from the various locations until Macworld was down to only 4 locations. Apple withdrew, typically with little or no notice, from Boston, Paris (which eventually kind of morphed into the Apple Expo Paris), and Tokyo and NAB.
Amusingly, Phil Schiller has a history of being sent to do “the final” Apple keynote — for example, I believe he presided over the last France keynote.
