It’s not just choosing the dreadful EDGE network AT&T operates over an alternative like Verizon that is a harbinger of discontent. Apple’s well-hyped and eagerly-sought iPhone will be missing a number of features that may be desired by those who buy the new gadget.
Gizmodo listed the things the iPhone won’t have. If the AT&T network wasn’t enough of a show-stopper for people, the non-replaceable battery has to be one. I can’t be the only person who likes having a spare battery or at least access to purchasing one if needed.
No over-the-air access to iTunes, either by WiFi or EDGE, is a very shortsighted limitation on a mobile Apple device that offers music playback as a feature. Why they would leave that off the deliverable list for their Internet-connected, music-playing iPhone is anyone’s guess.

No ITMS on the iPhone is a consequence of Steve Jobs’ desire to try and keep things in the One True Way. That said, there have been some infrastructure changes in iTunes/iPod that make it a possibility in the future: In particular the ability to do a reverse sync of purchased music to an authorized computer via iTunes. I imagine that they’ve played with it a bit in the labs and haven’t been happy with the iTMS experience on the phone at this point.
What I’m most interested in is whether smart playlists stay smart on the iPhone (on an iPod, they stay frozen in their last-sync’d state). I use a dynamic smart playlist on my Mac for most of my iTunes listening, and it’d be nice if it were dynamic on the iPhone as well.

Never mind the fact that you can’t install real applications over it. I would imagine that the hype over iPhone web apps will quickly die when users realize how slow they are over EDGE.

The iPhone has an iPod dock connector.
Everyone and their brother in the iPod ecosystem space has an external backup battery / charger / AC adaptor / car adaptor / etc. for the iPod.
Won’t these work for the iPhone?
Where’s the problem?
Oh yeah. The AT&T network. They’re right about that - they can’t even do phone coverage in my area.

Gosh, while they’re listing things the iPhone doesn’t have, don’t forget first and foremost to add the lack of a counterintuitive operating system, a separate chicklet for everything and a lousy low def screen. Then there’s the blatant lack of onboard fans, no mouse, no external flexible 24″ cinematic HD display, no fullsize keyboard, no ability to dual-boot, no crystal ball for ESP, no built-in juice dispenser, orgasmatron, or egg incubator. This POS doesn’t even run Apple’s own GarageBand!! Another thing, it’s just too damn small. They should have done something really useful like MicroSoft’s Surface table.

Why would the leave of iTunes Music Store downloads? Uh, how about AT&T’s horribly slow download speeds on Edge? The Chopin’s minute waltz would take an hour to download! Let alone the movie Speed.
