A while back, I mentioned about all the Mac minis that my company goes thru. I decided to start keeping the boxes as we got them. After a couple months, the collection is getting pretty good. In the loft of my house I’ve decided to just start building The Great Wall of Apple Boxes. Also, when my neice comes over she likes to build little houses to knock over. (Well, I build them, she knocks them over.)
If you’ve ever been to a Macworld Keynote, you know how much the Apple team cares about the packaging. Steve Jobs will usually introduce the product and then show the box that it will ship in. (Strangely, that draws more applause.) Apple makes such nice packaging that it feels strange to throw the boxes away. What do you do with the boxes that your Apple products come in?
(PS, I’ll give a $10 iTMS gift certificate to the first person to list all the boxes in that picture.)

I spy, with my little eye, boxes belonging to…
XServe G5.
Powerbook 15″.
I think I see some Mac Minis (just a few).
Wired and Wireless keyboards.
Mighty Mouse.
iPod Firewire/USB Hybrid Cable.
iPod Nano.
Those awesome $200 hi-fi in-ear iPod headphones.
Airport Express and Extreme base stations.
iPod FM Tuner/Remote for 5G/Nano.
An iPod wall charger.
Mac OS X.
iMac G5.
And since that sleeve technically isn’t a box, I think I should get my iTMS certificate.
…Please?

So close…but the box on the top was a product of it’s own. I knew that would be the stumper. Anyone else want to give it a try?

Every semester my school buys new G5s, new displays (if needed) and sometimes new software/other hardware.
Its a little exciting to see twenty five G5 boxes lined up at my school waiting to be tossed away (and sad, that I can’t take one of the machines home, hehe)..
I never thought to take a photo. Just this past month they had the new version of Toast, i think there were 40 boxes of that.
Christopher
p.s. I am graduating this summer and too bad I didn’t think to take a photo at one time.. ;(

A stolen box story…
My employer, a school district, purchased 200 iMac computers in the spring of 2001. Each elementary school was to receive thirty-six of the new machines. As we setup the new computers in each building, we packed the 8 year old Macintosh LC II computers in the shiny new Apple boxes. We used tape to seal the boxes closed for easier handling. Since Mac LC II computers with 12 inch monitors were much smaller than iMac computers, we were able to fit 2 old computers in each iMac box. We completed one of the school installations on Thursday afternoon. We left 18 boxes of old computers and a giant pile of Styrofoam stacked in the hallway near the gymnasium. That night the school had a band concert. Many of the parents commented on the large pile of new Apple Computers. On Monday, our maintenance department sent a truck over to pickup the old computers for disposal, but they were gone. All 18 boxes had been stolen during the weekend. I often wonder what the thief thought when he opened the boxes and found that each box contained two very outdated computers. I am also surprised that the thief did not notice the heaping pile of Styrofoam that was stacked in the hallway next to the iMac boxes. Did the criminal not realize that the computer shaped foam had been removed from the new boxes?

It’s encouraging to see a business actually deploying so many minis. this would mean that it isn’t a very graphic intensive business but the minis do fine for what 95% of what anyone needs a computer to do: Letters, spreadsheet, small database, Web access, Email and a few pictures, and print stuff out.
Don’t tell us the name of the firm, But just what kind of business it is. I’m really just curious more than anything.

I’m with grognard… I’m dying to know what you guys do with so many minis… Are we talking desktops, resale of some sort, datacenter?

I’d love to have those old LC II’s, maybe the thiefs were collectors….imagine! You get 36 free LC II’s!!!
OMG!!!
And your school was gonna throw them all away?

Are you interested in selling any of those boxes? I’m looking to repackage my mini and selling it but I misplaced the box. If you are willing to spare me one, please contact me via email.
Thanks,
Glen
