Using A Mac To Record Your LIfe

About 8 months ago, I was reading a book by my ancestor. He lived in Switzerland and was one of my first ancestors to come to America. The book was his history and was a large part in why I visited Switzerland this year and learned alot about where I came from.

When I got done reading the book, I wondered what stories of me would be remembered in five generations from now. After thinking about it, I realized that I was starting to forget things that happened just five years ago. How in the world would they know about me? So I made a plan to change that.

I call it my Memory Journal. I realized that I have already forgotten quite a bit from the first few decades of my life. If those memories are fading already, I can’t imagine what it will be like in a few more decades. That thought scared me.

My memory journal consists of memories that I have never written down but would like to remember. Each day, I think of something to write. Some of my posts have been my first plane ride, the first time that I got in big trouble, the names of my elementary teachers and something they taught me, the first time I used a cell phone, etc.

You’d be surprised at how much comes rolling back when you think about it. I don’t write really long entries, but I put enough detail in there so that I will remember it when I’m sixty. And, I write as if someone is reading it for the first time. It should be clear enough to give them the story, but not too long to bore them.

Why is this on the FreeMacBlog? Because, like most everything else, things are easy to do on a Mac.

To write these journals, I use a program called MacJournal. It is free and makes it very simple to keep a daily digest.

I keep a good backup of my computers, but also I print the full document out every two weeks so I am sure to not lose any of it.

One final tip would be to find a way to remind yourself each day. Personally, I don’t like to have too many emails in my inbox so I have an email sent to me each day and my rule is that I can’t erase it until I have written the entries. To do this, I use a cron job, but you can use iCal or a free online service like Memotome.com. They’ll send you an email every day at the same time.

If emailing isn’t a daily thing for you, you can try an old fashion way like a rock on your pillow that can’t be moved until you write in it. Or keep your iPod and iTunes library off limits until it’s done.

If anyone has any other tips of tries it and finds it rewarding, please let me know.

Cool article. I’ve been trying to the same for about a year now, and though I suck at updating my daily Journal as often as I should, MacJournal has become one of the first five apps I install on my Mac.

MacJournal has become my little private Tome Of Knowledge. Since you can select text or html from any app and create a new entry in MacJournal containing that selection (including formatting, but it screws up html layout sometimes), it’s easy to create your own database of little facts, cool quotes, interesting articles (since it indexes your journal file, it’s easy to find stuff you know you put in there) and all that goodness.

Just Spreading The Word. Now, on to QuickSilver .. ;)

Cool aritcle indeed. I use MacJournal for to record thoughts, feelings, and experiences pertaining to my life and love life. I update it about every 3 days. Very useful and easy to use. Not a steap learning curve at all on the initial use. It has auto-save too (I’m notorious for forgetting that).

I have tried out a few different freeware journaling apps, and my favorite is Journaler. It’s very clean and slick, but has some great features like Collections (smart folders) and media integration (audio, photos, movies, etc).

If only I were as good as you at remembering to put entries in…

Grandma Linda says: I couldn’t figure out what I would use MacJournal for, and then I remembered all my good intentions of creating a garden journal. I still forget to put in the entries, (what’s in bloom, weather etc) but it has been very helpful for lists: I have lists of all the perennials I have purchased for the last two years, where I got them and how much they cost. This is important since I now have 38 varietes of Lilies, 22 different peonies, etc. My next effort will be to catalog all the plants in my 15 gardens!

Then I moved on to making lists of other things to remember: I have company over for dinner quite often, so I list the date and the menu that I served so that I don’t always serve the same meal to the same guests.

Maybe not as interesting as journaling my thoughts, feelings etc., but very useful to aid my memory.

I’m curious because I was thinking about buying an iPhone. Also, do you have to buy the internet package when buying the iPhone? If you don’t have the internet package, can you get online whenever you have a Wi-Fi connection? Or would it be better to buy an iPod Touch and a cheaper phone?

I’ve heard that there are a lot of perks to jail breaking your iPhone. The only reason I haven’t done it yet is because it voids the warranty. Can anybody tell me some of the perks to doing this? I’ve also heard that once you jailbreak your iPhone you can reset it to un-jail break mode and that they can’t detect it in the store if you go to get it replaced. Is this true? And if it is can anybody show me how to reverse a jail break?
